A car accident is one of the most unnerving events that can happen to a person. First, the jolt of the collision itself is a shock to the entire body both mentally and physically. Even if there is no apparent injury, the unseen damage can appear as long as 6-10 weeks after the collision leaving a person to believe something else caused the problem, not the car accident. For example, it is usually not possible to know the exact cause of neck or back pain in the days or weeks after a car accident. Muscles and ligaments are strained and can become inflamed and sore but usually heal without treatment in a few weeks. If your pain lasts longer than a month or more, you need to be evaluated by a principled chiropractor. You may have a disk injury or a facet joint injury.
The most common cause of chronic neck pain after a car accident is facet joint injury. This is pain located to the left or right of the center of the neck. The area may be tender to the touch and can be mistaken for muscle pain.
An injured disk can also cause chronic neck pain. Disks allow the neck to move while disks prevent the neck from moving too much. A "whiplash" injury can cause tearing of the outer wall of a disk. This usually heals on its own. Unfortunately, sometimes the disk itself does not heal. It may get weaker and can become stressed during normal every-day activities. This pain comes from the nerve endings in the outer wall of the disk. A damaged disk is often the main cause of chronic neck pain in about 25% of patients. Sometimes a disk herniates. This can cause arm pain not associated with the neck called "referred pain."
A doctor of chiropractic is trained to evaluate, diagnose and treat chronic neck pain. Some chiropractors dedicate their practice to auto accident and traumatic injury patients. Although the entire spine is involved in care and treatment, the upper cervical area is the main focus of treatment. A chiropractor can teach you how to exercise your spine. They perform "adjustments" on your spine to relieve "subluxations." Subluxations cause pinched nerves. An adjustment relieves the pressure on those nerves.
If you have unexplained neck or back pain, contact a doctor of chiropractic. Adjustments remove "dis-ease" allowing for healing to begin. Some chiropractors also offer nutritional advice, exercise programs, and other care plan modalities to fit your schedule.
